Peninsula Montessori, Inc. is a preschool for 3 to 6 year olds. The school follows the philosophy of Dr. Maria Montessori, an Italian educator.
The primary goal of the Montessori program is to help each child begin the journey towards reaching full potential in all areas of life. The self-directed materials promote the development of physical co-ordination, social skills, and emotional growth as well as cognitive preparation. The prepared environment allows the child to experience the joy of self-directed learning and provides the time to enjoy the process. This in turn ensures the development of self-esteem and builds the experiences from which children awaken their thirst for knowledge. The Montessori philosophy gives the respect, love, and freedom children deserve. It is the first step towards a better world, because it is the child who constructs the adult and therefore, society.
Dr. Montessori also felt the environment for learning is one full of clean, neat activities which the children are motivated to do on their own. It is a free and loving environment, and although the children are dependent on the adult, the adult is also dependent on the children. Maria Montessori felt children should be thought of as individuals, on their way to becoming well-rounded adults.
